GREEK KEFI: SHARING FAMILY TRADITIONS BEYOND BORDERS
This month, I had the pleasure of discovering a trio that embodies the principles of Hellenic spirit to a T!
Readers may be wondering why Philo4Thought
is crossing borders - perhaps to prove that Greek Kefi (Spirit) has no borders....
After attending a number of events in the US and Canada, I came across an inspiring tale related to a conversation about a cookbook,
Around the Greek Table. Digging past the initial conversation about “food like
Mom used to make,” I found that the book was actually a true family collaboration grounded in a sincere love for Hellenic heritage and a desire to share its rich cultural traditions with others. Read more

A GREEK SISTER ACT: COOKBOOK PRESERVES MOTHER'S INTUITIVE, FAMILY-FRIENDLY DISHES
Growing up in Toronto's Danforth neighbourhood, Betty, Eleni and Samantha Bakopoulos cherished dinners with their parents -- even if the meal was always served as soon as they returned home from school. Because their parents, who came to Canada from Greece in the late 1960s, both worked night shifts at the maintenance company they owned, dinner was promptly served at 3:45 p.m.
"We never realized it was early," says Samantha. The evening meal was a precious hour each day when parents and daughters could connect. "You could not miss dinner," Samantha says. "You have time to breathe together, eat together, know each other," says Eleni.
Decades later, the sisters went their separate ways, moved to three different cities. Samantha, 30, is a teacher in Ottawa. Eleni, 37, is an artist and photographer in Kingston. Betty, 39, is a former teacher in Guelph. However, in 2009, they reunited because food and family had once again become synonymous. Through 2009, they regularly met on weekends to cook up a storm and re-create many dishes that their mother made. One hundred and five recipes later, they had their new cookbook, Three Sisters Around the Greek Table.

GLORIOUS GREEK FOOD
I wouldn't have minded sitting around the Bakopoulos table when their three daughters were growing up.
Maybe there would have been some ouzo, which is the drink I turn to when I'm cooking or when I need a little pick-me-up.
Mostly though, there would have been the glorious food that those daughters celebrate in their cookbook Three Sisters Around the Greek Table. The three sisters are Betty, Eleni and Samantha. Eleni is a Kingstonian. Their cookbook is an eloquent reminder that there is more to Greek cooking than souvlaki and baklava, and with gorgeous pictures by Eleni, it will have you salivating before you even cook from it.
The sisters not only wrote, tested and photographed the book, they've also done a pretty good job marketing it."We just followed this book on how to market your book," says Eleni. It led them to several national TV appearances, most notably theSteven and Chrisshow on CBC. And they had success entering the prestigious Gourmand World Cookbook Awards, which are held in Paris. In that competition, they first won in the foreign category for Canada. That qualified them to go to Paris recently for the worlds, at which Three Sisters was named one of the top four books in the foreign category...

THREE SISTERS AROUND THE GREEK TABLE: SHARING RECIPES AND RISK
Three sisters are laughing around a table in a pastry shop on the Danforth, sharing memories of growing up in Greektown, finishing each other's stories, and dishing about the risky business of publishing a cookbook.
"With three, it divides up the risk," Eleni Bakopoulos points out cheerfully. Sisters Betty and Samantha agree.
When the Greek coffees are done, they play at reading the grinds (akin to reading tea leaves). So far, their fortunes look good. Three Sisters Around the Greek Table (www.3greeksisters.com) was launched last November and is already in its second print run. The book is self-published, but doesn't look it. In Paris, the trio recently won a Gourmand World Cookbook Award.
The fates had scattered the sisters across the province, but their timing and talents converged when they got the cookbook urge.

COOKBOOK WINS BEST IN WORLD STATUS
Guelph’s Bakopoulos sisters have brought honour to Canada and to Guelph as their cookbook Three Sisters Around the Greek Table won Best in World status at the Gourmand World Cookbook Awards in France.
Five Canadian cookbooks won Best in World honours. Three Sisters Around the Greek Table won in the best foreign cookbook category. The awards were held in Paris on Feb. 11.
The sisters — Betty, Eleni and Samantha Bakopoulos — drew from their Greek heritage when compiling the book, which they photographed and published themselves.
The book contains 105 recipes, 112 food photographs, tips, variations and make-ahead recipes. The sisters also share some of their experiences with family and food.
Since publishing the book last summer, the sisters have appeared on OMNI TV’s Edo Kai Tora, Breakfast Television, CBC Radio’s Fresh Air and the Steven and Chris Show.

Ti na pw.....I bought your book recently and absolutely LOVE the recipes! If I am going to be honest, when I originally purchased it (in Ottawa),I thought to myself, what a great idea, I'll buy it to support my fellow Ellhnides...but since then have been so pleasantly surprised by the awesome recipes and little explanations and quotes along the way....growing up in a restaurant (shocking, I know!) and being part of a very Greek family I want to keep the same flavours in my home for my children that I grew up with....I want the aroma of their home to be filled with love and sweet memories, which for us (Greeks) comes in the form of food and I am grateful that you came up with a book for everyone but especially for the new Greek noikokures who want to pass our culture and traditions on to the next generation.

WHAT'S COOKIN: THREE GREEK SISTERS HAD SPECIAL SUMMER PROJECT
Today we are pleased to introduce some new friends of ours! Every once in awhile we encourage a guest chef to produce a recipe for our column.
The recipe and photo today are courtesy of Betty, Eleni and Samantha Bakopoulos. These sisters— and remarkable cooks— have just self-published their first cookbook: Three Sisters Around the Greek Table. This book has just won the Gourmand World Cookbook Award for Best Foreign Cuisine in Canada.
All three women have appeared on CBC Radio as well as Omni TV and more importantly— in my cooking school!
This is one of my favourite new cookbooks. I don’t very often give a “plug” for a cookbook, but I was really taken by this book. I can vouch for the food, as I’ve had the pleasure of eating some of it.
But the sisters also did all the cooking, food styling and photography themselves for their book. They devoted the summer to cooking together, then sitting down with their families together to eat— what a wonderful way to put a cookbook together— and that family feeling sure pays off in the book. A TALE OF THREE SISTERS
There’s an engaging photo on the cover of Three Sisters Around the Greek Table, a Cookbook, (Adelfes; $34.95). It shows the three authors, sisters Betty, Eleni and Samantha Bakopoulos as little girls, spreading a tablecloth over a table in the garden. The wind has caught the cloth as it billows up, a charming moment from childhood.
Inside, a photo of the girls, now beautiful young women sitting at the same table, inviting readers and cooks to partake a tempting selection of dishes from their Greek heritage. "This is real Greek cooking,” the authors write. “This is not the stuff of fast food Greek restaurants that has come to characterize Greek food in the minds of many.”
The trio has dipped into their family’s repertoire and dishes they’ve encountered on trips to Greece for the content. There’s a genuine feel of kitchen table camaraderie in the recipes and comments through the book.
The sisters recommend these meatballs for kids as easy finger food or added to tomato sauce and pasta. For adults, “they are the perfect meze to be enjoyed with a strong spirit like Ouzo.” Or, a glass of wine.

First of all I wanted to thank you for your lovely gift to the culinary world!! I just received my copy of your wonderful cookbook and I cannot wait to get started!! I read an article in the Hamilton Spectator newspaper entitled "Food? Its All Greek to them' 11/20/09. I thought it was a great story and it was nice to see three beautiful women from my old neighborhood sharing their culinary "life experience."
Many of the recipes I have always wanted (and wondered about) are contained within your book (I knew it was tomato paste in those potatoes!!). I am the cook in my house. I travel extensively for my work so I look forward to coming home and making meals for my wife and I. There is nothing I enjoy more than a nice glass of wine while making a delicious meal!! Times in the kitchen and around the dinner table have always been the most profound times I have had. The tone of your book would suggest that you and your families feel the same.
Thanks again for sharing.

Cookbook offers glimpse into Greek family life
The Bakopoulos sisters might well have called their new cookbook My Big Fat Greek Cookbook, since the book, which started out as a keepsake item for their children, has grown in size and scope since they set out on the project about a year ago.
Instead they went with Three Sisters Around the Greek Table, which will launch with a party at the eBar Nov. 16 from 7 to 9:30 p.m. Take note: There will be food made from the recipes in the self-published cookbook.
That’s not only good planning — it’s just the way it was in the Bakopoulos household when the girls were growing up, and it continues to be, they said. Food factors into everything.
“We’d wake up to the sound of our Dad in the kitchen and come home from school to find our Mom in the kitchen. And on the weekends, our aunts and uncles would come over and we’d all be in the kitchen,” said Eleni, 37, who now lives in Kingston with her husband and two children.
“We were children of immigrant parents and they worked a lot. But every day, at 3:45 p.m., we’d sit down together and have dinner as a family,” said Betty, 38, who lives in Guelph with her husband and three daughters. “I think our family is close because of that.”
“We take pride in the title,” said Samantha, 30, who lives in Toronto with her husband. “We always sat around the dinner table. It’s kind of natural that we would write a cookbook.”

This cookbook is an excellent collection of traditional and Modern Greek recipes, with mouthwatering pictures and a collection of anecdotes and stories that make it fun, interesting, and lighthearted. The local authors are three sisters, Betty, Eleni and Samantha Bakopoulos, first generation Canadians with a desire to share the secrets and gems of a Greek kitchen. They are busy women, like many of us, but they strive to uphold the many Greek traditions of food and family that they were raised with. This book promotes these traditions and inspires you, the reader and cook, to create similar rituals within your own home.
If you love Greek food then one look at the tantalizing food photos will have you sold. Each recipe boasts a large colour photograph. Within the text you will learn what a typical Greek kitchen would contain in the pantry, fridge, freezer, spice rack and herb garden. The best traditional Greek mezedes (appetizers), main dishes, breads and desserts are all there. All seem quick and easy with flavourful results. The book also gives you interesting seasonal menu ideas, ideas that inspire one to think of the flavours of each season. There is also a special occasion menu section to help you save a bit of time when considering a menu for a party, event or get-together.
The book is worth a purchase for its inspiration of great Greek food alone, but also for its celebration of the ritual of eating, sharing and talking while gathered together around the dinner table.
